The Central Department of English at Tribhuvan University, Kirtipur observed a grand ‘Welcome and Farewell programme 2024’ on May 27, 2024 at the auditorium of CDED. Organized by the third-semester students of CDE, the event aimed to welcome new MA in English students and bid farewell to the graduating batch.
The event was presided over by Mr. Tilak Rai, a third-semester student, and featured Prof. Dr. Jiblal Sapkota, Head of the Central Department of English as the chief guest. Special guest Prof. Dr. Anirudra Thapa, along with other faculty members, also attended the event. The ceremony was inaugurated by lighting the traditional Diyo, an oil lamp.
The programme included live musical performances, cultural dances, poetry recitation, speeches, and badges and Token of Love distribution to the students. A special welcome and farewell song composed by Sarita Aryal and performed by the third-semester students was a standout moment. Sarita Aryal also hosted the event, with Sambandh Bhattrai delivering welcome speech.
During the event, first-semester students were presented with badges, while graduating students received Tokens of Love from the chief guest and special guest. Additionally, a nine-member student club named Creative Literary Forum (CLF) was simultaneously reformed and declared during the event. Assist. Prof. Mahesh Paudyal, who is also an acclaimed poet and critic, declared the new committee and shed light on the need for such a forum. He also recalled the significant role of CLF in holding various literary activities, taking students beyond the classroom since its establishment, and hoped the newly formed committee would carry on the lineage. The committee included MA students Shilash Thapa Tamang, Manisha BK, Tilak Rai, Sarita Aryal, Sagun Rai, Aeishwari Jha, Shisir Chapagai, Prabin Dhungel, and Devendra BK.
In his address, Chief Guest Prof. Dr. Jiblal Sapkota commended the students for organizing the event and continuing the CDE tradition. He discussed the department’s ongoing academic and research activities, including the periodic publication of research journals, and encouraged students to participate actively in all aspects of their education. Prof. Sapkota also highlighted the revised MA English program, and informed that MA in English is now open to students with bachelor’s degrees in any discipline.
The event reached its conclusion with a heartfelt vote of thanks delivered by Tilak Rai, the chaiperson of the event.
